HP Awards Classroom Technologies to 172 Institutions

HP this week announced the recipients of its 2007 HP Technology for Teaching grant program. Forty-two colleges and universities and 130 K-12 schools will be receiving more than $7 million in cash, gear, and professional development.

The grant program focuses on improving student achievement through classroom technologies and encouraging interest in STEM subject areas (science, technology, engineering, and math).

Recipients of this year's grants will receive mobile technologies, cash, and training. On the K-12 side, teams of five teachers at the 130 schools will receive five HP Tablet PCs, five multimedia projectors, five HP digital cameras, five HP Officejet all in one systems, software, accessories, and a cash stipend for each teacher. The company said the total package per team is worth about $31,000. Professional development services will be provided by HP and ISTE. A total of $4.1 million in awards is being presented to K-12 institutions.

On the higher ed side, each recipient at the 42 two- and four-yer colleges and universities will receive HP Tablet PCs, a faculty stipend, and various Hp products, valued at a total of $68,000 per award. GIS and GPS software is also included in the prizes. In total, institutions of higher education will receive some $2.8 million in awards.

HP's Technology for Teaching grant program has awarded $36 million to educators since 2004.
