Reflex Security has released Reflex Virtual Security Center (VSC). The solution is intended to enhance security by providing greater visibility and control over virtualized environments and integrates with Reflex Security's Reflex Virtual Security Appliance (VSA), as well as with VMware's VirtualCenter.

Purdue University has selected StudentLink from CollegiateLink to manage its 840 student clubs, organizations, and fraternities and sororities. StudentLink will allow individual organizations at the 39,000-student university to conduct online surveys and elections, recruit new members, manage membership lists, and plan events.

UC Irvine Extension, the continuing education arm of the University of California, Irvine, has announced a joint educational venture with Brazil-based Fundacao Getulio Vargas (FGV). Through the partnership, FGV--a nonprofit higher education institution and the largest provider of online education in Brazil--has created free online courses, presented in Portuguese, as part of the UC Irvine Extension's OpenCourseWare (OCW) initiative.

Moravian College has deployed a Webgate appliance from Mi5 Networks to protect the campus network from Web threats including spyware, botnets, viruses, and other malware. Moravian also selected Webgate for its ability to identify and quarantine botnet-controlled machines and perform unattended disinfection of compromised systems.

California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has gone public with its deployment of an Aruba Networks wireless LANs across its Pasadena campus. According to the school's Web site, the wireless network was paid for by an anonymous donor and consists of four Aruba 6000 Modular Mobility Controllers and over 700 access points. The campus encompasses 124 acres and has 2,000 students and 5,700 faculty and staff.

The Executive MBA program at the California State University, Sacramento said it has dramatically improved its constituent relationship management processes since implementing Intelliworks CRM last January to track its sales cycles and manage prospects. Formerly, the small admissions department, which also handles admissions for the institution's master's programs in accountancy and advanced business studies, had been managing contacts through a spreadsheet. Communications weren't being tracked at all.

The 400-student New England School of Communications (NESCom), which shares a campus with Husson University in Bangor, ME, has added a mobile television production facility to its curriculum. The facility is housed in a 32-foot truck that's equipped with Compact Routers and Synapse modular terminal gear from Nvision.

An overwhelming student vote for Mediasite will put the Webcasting platform from Sonic Foundry into University of Wyoming lecture halls this fall. Mediasite is a presentation capture tool that records and synchronizes audio, video, and slides and then allows the presenter to provide it online for on-demand viewing or in podcast form. The tool also enables the presenter to make the presentation available online as it happens.

The blogosphere is awash with talk about the possible overall weakness of the Domain Name System (DNS) architecture. For its part, Microsoft's released a DNS fix in its patch slate for July, but Redmond seems to have problems just getting it to end users. Moreover, some users of the DNS fix have experienced additional difficulties.

Desire2Learn this week announced a new mobile application of its Desire2Learn Learning Environment. Called Desire2Learn 2GO, the application ties in with Learning Environment 8.3 to provide access via Blackberry. Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA will be implementing customer relationship management (CRM) and digital recruiting tools from Azorus. Mercyhurst, with about 3,000 students, is the first institution to use the Digital Recruit solution in the United States. The service optimizes recruiting efforts by delivering personalized communications to students interested in attending the college.

Bridgewater College has selected the LANenforcer security appliance from Nevis Networks to secure its campus networks. The school chose the Nevis LANenforcer for access control, policy enforcement, and regulatory reporting. The appliance blocks malicious code and scans endpoints prior to granting network access.

The Heartland Centers at Saint Louis University School of Public Health will be implementing the software-as-a-service (SaaS) version of Meridian Learning Management System (LMS) from Meridian Knowledge Solutions. The Heartland Centers chose the Meridian LMS to provide preparedness training, among other types of education, for first responders and health workers in Missouri and nationwide.
