Yahoo partly acceded to the demands of corporate raider Carl Icahn by agreeing to seat Icahn and two of his proxy-slate candidates to Yahoo's board. The about-face move by Yahoo is a surprising turn in the ongoing harsh wooing of the company, which began in January with an unsolicited acquisition proposal from Microsoft.

Desire2Learn is reporting the first bit of (tentatively) good news to come out of Texas since Blackboard initiated its patent-infringement suit against it almost two years ago to the day. According to Desire2Learn, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Lufkin Division, has denied issuing sanctions in Blackboard's motion for contempt. But Blackboard told us Desire2Learn definitely is not in the clear.

Research in Motion Ltd., maker of the popular BlackBerry handset, on Friday issued a patch to plug a vulnerability in its BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) solution. The vulnerability could allow hackers to enter into a network via a maliciously crafted PDF file.

Microsoft's Chief Architect Ray Ozzie dubbed it a "Web-catalyzed services transformation," and some say the sky will be the limit for cloud computing in the enterprise. However, there still will be a strong need for information security -- even in the clouds. A new Gartner Inc. research report, released on Tuesday, predicts growth in the online security application industry segment as companies gravitate toward using hosted applications.

San Jose State University (SJSU) School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) and Angel Learning are collaborating on a project to explore the integration of the Angel Learning Management Suite (LMS) and the Second Life virtual world. The work will focus on how student results from activities in virtual worlds can be securely shared with the Angel LMS. The expected outcome of the project is an Angel dropbox that students can use to share evidence of their work from within Second Life.

The University of Minnesota Solar Vehicle Project--one of the first teams to meet all the qualifications for racing in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge--hit the road on July 13 in a 2,400-mile race from Texas to Canada that ends July 22. The team will be posting updates throughout the race.

The product addresses patching inconsistencies that seem to affect busy Oracle database administrators (DBAs), who don't always have time to test and patch. Software provider Starfish Retention Solutions has announced the upcoming launch of its first product, Starfish Office Hours. The company said this will be the first in a series of products intended to help higher education institutions improve retention and graduation rates by aiding in the delivery of programs designed to help at-risk student populations.

Linden Lab, creator of the virtual world Second Life, and IBM have demonstrated virtual world interoperability by teleporting avatars between the Second Life Preview Grid and an OpenSim virtual world server. The Second Life Grid is a development platform created by Linden Lab, and OpenSim is an open source server for hosting 3D virtual environments.

A new plugin called TokBox, from a San Francisco company of the same name and funded by YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim, allows users to talk with each other over live video. A component with a "Push to Talk" button can be added to a social network profile, blog, or personal Webpage. A visitor clicks the button to connect to the host in real time using live video and audio.

Nova Scotia's St. Francis Xavier University is acquiring the Azorus CRM suite after working with the company's Digital Recruit system for the last year. With Digital Recruit, students at recruiting events fill out a special form with a digital pen that captures the information being written. Recruiters then upload the data stored on the pen to the CRM system, which initiates a communication plan for the student, including an automatic welcome e-mail message.

In response to the Arizona Board of Regents' Solar Energy Initiative, Arizona State University (ASU) announced last Friday that it is establishing a Solar Power Laboratory. The university also announced it has brought on Christiana Honsberg, Stuart Bowden, and George Maracas to help lead the venture.
