Microsoft Tuesday announced the availability of Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update. The company has also posted the upgrade to its download site. SP1 releases are typical milestones for Microsoft products as many IT shops wait until the first update before deploying. Vista's update comes a little more than a year after its initial release.

SAS has broadened the availability of SAS OnDemand for Academics, a service that allows faculty and students to integrate advanced data analysis in their teaching and learning activities. Users register for the service, download a SAS software application via the Web, and then perform processing by connecting to a hosted server at SAS.

A consortium of vendors is hosting a conference for educators on the use of 3D simulation-based learning. The Interactive Digital Center (IDC) Consortium is a collaboration formed by EON Reality, Nvidia, HP, Christie Digital, and Microsoft to promote the advancement of interactive 3D (i3D) visualization solutions for simulation-based learning and workforce development. The event will be held in Florence, SC April 9 through 11.

iWorx, which produces hardware and software tools for physiology teaching and research, has introduced LabsByDesign, a set of lab experiments for instructors. The new service provides 150 lab experiments in cardiovascular, respiratory, and neuromuscular physiology through a Web-based selection guide.

The University of Minnesota announced it plans to deploy the Trapeze Networks Smart Mobile 802.11n wireless network product suite campus-wide. Beginning in May and continuing over the next five years, about 9,500 access points will be deployed to serve more than 80,000 people across the university's two campuses, in an effort to deliver secure wireless access to users wherever they are on campus.

Vanderbilt University has released a version of its homepage designed for the Apple iPhone. The site was created by the Vanderbilt News Service's Office of Web Communications, which is working to optimize the university Web site for other mobile devices.

The University of Houston announced that it would be installing AT&T U-verse services into student housing on a college campus. The IP-based TV and broadband Internet services will be included in all 700 one- and two-bedroom apartments of a 547,000-square-foot residence hall under construction for graduate and professional students.

Umpqua Community College in Winchester, OR announced in February that its Moodle course management system had been hacked earlier in the year, potentially exposing student information. According to a statement from the college, there was no evidence that personal records had been affected. The school also noted that the IT department knew how the system had been compromised and had taken steps to address the security vulnerabilities, which included shutting Moodle down temporarily.

Ed tech developer Blackboard this week launched a new video surveillance solution for its campus management system called Blackboard Video Surveillance.
