Non-profit certification group (ISC)² Wednesday kicked off its 2008 information security awards program with plans to hand out $100,000 for post-graduate information security research projects. Scholarships of up to $12,500 will be given out to eight full-time students pursuing a master's degree in information security at an accredited university.

A fully baked beta release of Microsoft's SQL Server 2008 is now available for testing. Microsoft released the "feature-complete" community technology preview (CTP) of the new SQL Server Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Migration to the Windows Vista operating system apparently isn't generating much enthusiasm among IT personnel in the enterprise. A survey conducted in November of last year by market research firm King Research supports that notion. The study found that "90 percent of participants have concerns about the migration to Windows Vista."

Free DNS service provider OpenDNS has launched its new, free Web filtering solution targeted toward education. The service taps into the expertise of IT professionals to create categories of Web sites that can be blocked by administrators with the click of a button (or two).

Apple this week released an update to Xsan, the company's 64-bit storage-area network solution designed to allow workstations and Xserve systems to share RAID storage over Fibre Channel networks. The new version adds workflow enhancements across the board and also introduces a new feature called MultiSAN.

Microsoft has announced a software giveaway program targeted to college and high school students. "DreamSpark" makes available, at no charge, a number of development and design programs for download. The program is now available to more than 35 million college students in Belgium, China, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the U.K. and the United States.

Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA has upgraded its data network and installed Extreme Networks switches to support video collaboration applications. Additionally, all servers were upgraded to Gigabit speeds. Extreme BlackDiamond 8800 switches support the core of the network, and Summit X450 switches outfit the edge. These switches feature Power over Ethernet (PoE), as well as routing capabilities. PoE enables network devices to run off a single CAT5 Ethernet cable that carries both data and power.

Microsoft Friday launched an open source software project on the SourceForge site, aimed at developing conversion tools that will translate Microsoft Office binary files to Office Open XML (OOXML) file formats. According to Vijay Rajagopalan, principal architect in the Interoperability & Platform Strategy group at Microsoft, initial work will focus on a Word conversion solution, with Excel and PowerPoint file formats to be addressed starting in the spring.

Adobe this week announced the impending release of Director 11, the first major update to the company's multimedia authoring tool in about four years. The new version expands 3D features with a new physics engine and new DirectX support and also introduces parity between JavaScript and Lingo for scripting. The new version will ship in March for Mac OS X (Intel) and Windows.

Louisiana State University has signed on with Moodlerooms to provide support, hosting, and other services for its Moodle deployment. As we reported in November, LSU is replacing two learning management systems on its campus with Moodle, an open-source LMS/CMS popular in higher education and elsewhere.

Software developer eCopy this week debuted a new line of document imaging and management solutions targeted toward education. The line includes three suites designed to automate document workflows, reduce paper waste, and integrate with systems common in colleges, universities, and K-12 schools, including popular multifunction printers and network scanners.

(Update 13, 9:25 p.m. PST) Six are confirmed dead in the shooting Thursday at Northern Illinois University's DeKalb campus, including the gunman, who died of a "self-inflicted gunshot" before police arrived on the scene. Four of those fatalities were dead on the scene; two died of their injuries later in the hospital. All of the injured were students, according to NIU President John G. Peters, including an injured graduate instructor. The gunman was a former NIU graduate student in sociology.

In an effort to promote expertise in Web 2.0 application development among the next generation of IT professionals, IBM has teamed up with two universities--University of California, Los Angeles and North Carolina State University--to provide support for academic programs teaching programming using open technologies like Groovy and Java in conjunction with Eclipse and Ruby on Rails. IBM also said it will be providing its previously announced Lotus Mashups software free to the academic community later this year.

IBM announced Thursday that its commercial mashup software Lotus Mashups will be made free for academic users when it's released later this year. The move is part of the company's plan to expand its Academic Initiative in 2008.

Just a week after higher education software maker Blackboard announced "tremendous" financial results for the year, it is finally facing off in a small-town Texas court against rival Desire2Learn in a patent dispute over e-learning software. Blackboard is seeking $17 million in lost revenue as well as an injunction against the company, which is based in Canada.

Denodo Technologies this week released the latest version of its flagship platform to create enterprise "data mashups." The Palo Alto, CA-based enterprise software maker is billing the release as "the industry's only unified data integration platform."

Sun Microsystems yesterday announced plans to purchase German software developer innotek, the maker of VirtualBox, a set of open source x86 virtualization tools for home and enterprise users. The announcement comes less than a month after the signing of Sun's $1 billion definitive agreement to acquire open source database developer MySQL. Terms of this latest deal have not been disclosed.

As part of its five-year, $200 million Banner enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation, the University of Illinois said it will deploy Progress SonicMQ to handle enterprise messaging. SonicMQ acts as middleware for transaction messages.
