Under an agreement with Sprint, medical students at the University of Louisville now will be able to use wireless technology to enhance their education and improve the clinical care of patients. Existing and incoming students will have the option of purchasing a discounted Sprint Windows Mobile smartphone that includes medical applications, such as ePocrates and medical and drug reference databases. The phone will also allow users to access the university's e-mail program and address book.

Central State University has deployed Leader Alert, an emergency notification system, for use at its Wilberforce and Dayton, OH campuses of more than 2,100 students. The communications service allows for simultaneous alert of the campus community by telephone, texting, and e-mail.

Jenzabar this week launched its new "Collaborative Source" initiative, a program that will make available the source code for the Jenzabar EX enterprise resource planning system. The aim of the program is to allow participating colleges and universities view and modify Jenzabar EX code "in order to align the administrative system even more closely with their institutional mission and goals."

Nearly half of public universities and public four-year colleges in the United States reported central IT budget cuts in fall 2008, according to new research released Wednesday by The Campus Computing Project. That's up significantly over last year. At the same time, open source software is looking more appealing to campuses, with about a fourth reporting a "high likelihood" that they will migrate to an open source LMS within the next five years.

Singapore university students recently competed in a competition to create mobile-optimized widgets using Blueprint, a programming platform for the development of mobile content from Yahoo. Twenty-four teams from six higher education institutions competed to build the best mobile widgets for four corporate brands.

Ed tech developer Elluminate announced Tuesday that it's beginning a phased rollout of new versions of its Elluminate Learning Suite components, including Live V9 and Publish V2, as well as Elluminate vSpaces. Temple University in Philadelphia has deployed Crossbeam Systems' X-Series security platform to secure campus-wide communications. The X-Series, Crossbeam's highest-performing security switch, consists of a "chassis" from which other vendors' applications can be run. The Crossbeam hardware facilitates the consolidation, virtualization, and simplification of security services delivery.
