Adobe Systems is planning to release the source code for the remoting and messaging technologies within its LiveCycle Data Services suite as a separately branded product called BlazeDS. A beta of the product is available now on the Adobe Labs developer portal.

WaveMaker Software unveiled two new developer solutions this week: WaveMaker Visual Assembly Studio and WaveMaker Rapid Deployment Framework for Enterprise Web 2.0. The former is designed to provide enterprise departmental developers with a visual dev tool for building data-driven Web apps. The latter enables those apps to be deployed to industry-standard Java app servers.

Just moments after Microsoft rolled out its last seven patches of 2007, security experts were prognosticating all over cyberspace, mainly pointing out the overwhelming number of fixes related to the Vista operating system in the December release alone.

Apple has released updates to several of its applications, including its podcasting and audio production suite GarageBand and its streaming media suite QuickTime Broadcaster. Other updates released this week include QuickTime and Apple Java. All of the updates are relatively minor, adding security and bug fixes, although Broadcaster also includes performance improvements and support for additional formats and standards.

Montclair State University in New Jersey has issued a rule requiring students to own and carry school-distributed cell phones equipped with location-marking GPS technology, the school announced. The requirement is designed to add a layer of security for students, according to the school. A student threatened while walking on or near campus could activate a beacon on the cell phone. If the signal wasn't turned off after a predetermined period of time, campus security could use the GPS signal and Google Maps to locate the student.

The FBI has charged a University of Pennsylvania student and a New Zealand hacker as part of an international probe into the spread of botnets, large replicating malicious software networks, the Associated Press reported.

Adobe this week released an update to Flash CS3 Professional, it's Web application development environment. The latest version (9.0.2) adds a variety of new features to bring the application up to speed with current players. It's available now for Mac OS X and Windows. The company has also released an Update to Photoshop Lightroom, its RAW image editing and photo management software.

In January, Michigan's Davenport University will begin offering military and civilian employees of the United States Department of Defense online computer security and biometrics courses, among others, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne announced last month that unspecified personal information from 32 mostly international students might have been accessed after "an unknown intruder" installed software on a university computer.

Google has released Google Web Toolkit 1.4.61, a minor update to its open-source AJAX development framework. The company has also released an unofficial build for Mac OS X 10.5 ("Leopard") that includes changes to the hosted mode for improved compatibility.

Norfolk, VA-based Centric CRM has changed its name to Concursive Corporation to reflect the evolution of the company's product line to beyond customer relationship management (CRM) functionality. The company also released Concourse Suite 5.0, the latest version of it flagship product. The suite combines traditional CRM features with Web authoring, content management, and Web 2.0 collaboration technologies (such as wikis and blogs).

ELC Technologies, a Santa Barbara, CA-based application development company, has partnered with FiveRuns to support enterprise-grade Ruby on Rails (RoR) applications. The partnership will help enable ELC's enterprise customers to actively monitor the performance of their RoR applications.

The state of Louisiana has selected Omnilert's e2Campus communications system for use as an emergency notification platform for higher education. Through the State Contract for Emergency Notification Services, Louisiana colleges and universities will be able to purchase the system without the need for an additional RFP, according to Omnilert.

Microsoft this week released updated institutional licensing terms for education customers. Microsoft's subscription licensing programs for education, collectively known as the Campus Agreement and School Agreement (CASA), now offer two additional benefits--home usage and evaluation rights--as well as several other changes in the areas of license renewal, buyouts, prorating, and other program terms.

IBM has added two new Web services to its alphaWorks Web site, which provides "sneak previews" of the kind of technologies that are being contemplated at IBM research and development labs. The new Web services include IBM Sharable Code, a platform for managing Web 2.0-type mashup applications, and IBM Web Highlights.

Symantec this week released a full-version update to its Norton AntiVirus suite for Mac OS X. The latest version incorporates support for Mac OS X ("Leopard") and adds a new feature called "Vulnerability Protection," which is designed to guard against infections from applications connected to the Internet. The company has also updates its Norton Confidential for Mac to support Leopard.

A year after its initial release, Microsoft this week announced it is shipping the first Service Pack for Office 2007. Office System Service Pack 1, originally expected in early 2008, improves stability, performance, and security, according to Office product manager Reed Shaffner.

Red Hat today began shipping a new application integrated development environment (IDE) that combines both tooling and runtime. JBoss Developer Studio Eclipse is an Eclipse-based IDE bundled with the JBoss Enterprise Application Platform and the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Network. It also includes tooling for Java EE, the JBoss Seam app framework, AJAX, Hibernate, Persistence, JBoss jPBM, Struts and the Spring IDE.

ProfCast has released a new version of its eponymous software designed for capturing and distributing classroom lectures as enhanced podcasts. ProfCast 2.2.0pb4, a public beta of the presentation capture software, includes fixes and enhancements to previous 2.2 releases and is available now for Mac OS X.

Roxbury Community College is beefing up its enrollment and constituent relationship management efforts. The college, located in Roxbury Crossing, near Boston, has signed on to use portal and CRM solutions from Jenzabar, as well as the Informz Text Messaging solution.

Microsoft has begun a full rollout of the private beta of its Live Office Workspace. OLW, unveiled earlier this year, is a Web-based feature of Microsoft Office that allows for collaboration and sharing of documents. The technologies included in OLW have already been rolled into Microsoft's Live@edu, a portal, communications, and collaboration suite for education.

Duke University Law School alerted about 1,400 people whose Social Security numbers were stored on a school website that it was illegally accessed, the school reported. School administrators said they were contacting affected people as a precaution but did not know whether the records were accessed.

A federal judge has denied a petition by Facebook Inc. to force a Harvard alumni magazine to take down documents pertaining to Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder, the Associated Press reported. The documents, including Zuckerberg's Harvard College application, a personal diary, and an e-mail he wrote to the college admissions office, are part of a court battle between Facebook and ConnectU, a social networking site founded by Harvard students where Zuckerberg worked before he went on to found Facebook.
