While marketers cite favorable results from online lead generation campaigns, few are allocating significant portions of their marketing budgets to online media. However, this may be changing in the coming year.

Windows Server 2008, Vista SP1 Hit RC Milestone

Microsoft Wednesday continued its hand in hand development of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista's first service pack, publishing release candidates (RC) for each product. The big updates in Windows 2008 RC1 revolve around enhancements to Group Policy, a management framework first introduced in Windows 2000 Server. Group Policy Preferences, as it has been renamed, was formerly known as PolicyMaker Standard Edition and Policy Share Manager.

Parallels Adds Full Mac OS X 10.5 Support, Premium Edition Launched

SWsoft has released an update for its virtualization software for Mac OS X, Parallels Desktop. The latest build (3.0 build 5582) brings full support for Mac OS X 10.5 ("Leopard"). It also brings various other, minor enhancements added since the previous build, released at the end of November. The company has also shipped a new suite called Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac Premium Edition, which bundles the core virtualization software with various Windows utilities.

FileMaker Pro Expands Leopard Support

FileMaker has released interim updates for its FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Pro Advanced database solutions. The new versions sport expanded compatibility for Mac OS X 10.5 ("Leopard") and for the software's Web publishing features.

Sun Releases Virtualization Management Tool Under GPLv3

Sun Microsystems this week announced the availability of the first component of its new virtualization platform, and laid out a roadmap for opening the platform's source code. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based systems company bills its xVM Ops Center virtualization management tool as a "highly scalable datacenter automation tool for complete management of heterogeneous global IT environments."

Vista SP1 To Enhance Security, Block Piracy

Responding to feedback from customers and channel partners, Microsoft said Tuesday that the first service pack for Windows Vista will fight off known exploits as well as kill off its "reduced functionality mode," a feature that locks out what the system perceives to be unlicensed users.

Oklahoma Consortium Adopts D2L for Higher Ed

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education has adopted Desire2Learn as the learning management system for the Oklahoma Higher Education Consortium, a public higher education consortium that focuses on the selection and deployment of technologies to be used in Oklahoma's colleges and universities.

Open-Source NetBeans Beta 2 Gets Dual-License

The NetBeans community has released the latest build of its open source, Java-based integrated development environment (IDE) with, among other new features, a dual-licensing scheme. NetBeans 6.0 Beta 2 is licensed under both the GNU General Public License (GPL) v2 with ClassPath exception and Sun Microsystems' Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL). NetBeans creator and primary corporate sponsor Sun Microsystems proposed adding the GPL license option.

Wacom today launched two additions to its flagship high-end tablet lineup, the Cintiq 12WX and the Cintiq 20 WSX.
