rSmart, which makes open source software for education, said it is collaborating with Sun Microsystems to develop Kuali-based programs certified to run on Sun's collection of systems and open source infrastructure software, including Solaris, MySQL, GlassFish, OpenSSO and OpenESB. The first application will be the Kuali Financial System.

After nearly three months of private beta testing involving about 100,000 users, Microsoft Office Live Workspace (OLW) is being rolled out worldwide as a full public beta. Previously, participants had to be qualified by Microsoft for the beta; now, as of today, it's open to all comers who wish to create workspaces. Coinciding with the public beta, Microsoft has also revved OLW with new features and enhancements and has kicked off a sweepstakes to build awareness for the service.
- Marine Research School Implements Virtual Storage Solution

The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami said it has implemented an ONStor network attached storage (NAS) solution in its two data centers. The school, comprising 100 faculty members, 190 graduate students, and 250 research support staff, is using the ONStor Bobcat NAS gateway to gain a single view into storage resources.

I decided to give open source database PostgreSQL a try using version 8.3, which was released early in February. My favored environment to use is Ubuntu Linux, which currently works well with MySQL installed. However, for this test, I opted to use the Windows version of PostgreSQL.

Sun Microsystems Tuesday completed its $1 billion acquisition of MySQL AB, a decision that was announced back in mid-January. Coinciding with the completion of the acquisition, Sun also made available MySQL's complete portfolio of products through its global sales and services organization. The company also recently announced several new universities deploying its systems.

The University of Pittsburgh has signed on with Alloy Software to automate technical support across multiple departments. The deal equips the university's Financial Information Systems (FIS) department with Alloy Navigator, which provides a centralized platform for IT service management. It replaces the department's previous home-grown system.

Sun Microsystems yesterday announced plans to purchase German software developer innotek, the maker of VirtualBox, a set of open source x86 virtualization tools for home and enterprise users. The announcement comes less than a month after the signing of Sun's $1 billion definitive agreement to acquire open source database developer MySQL. Terms of this latest deal have not been disclosed.

DataDirect issued an announcement last week that it has updated its DataDirect XQuery solution, which now supports XQuery functionality in the open source MySQL Enterprise Server relational database management system (RDBMS). XQuery is a W3C recommendation for an engine that can be used to query XML stores and XML data in RDBMSes.
