The hottest technology trends in higher ed today can be boiled down to two roughly converse capabilities: the delivery of time- and space-shifted instruction to individual students (think podcasts), and the coordination of disparate-source content within the classroom, for enriched group experiences. The first is taking advantage of existing, mostly consumer-oriented platforms such as iPods, web browsers, and PDAs. But the second is driving innovation in two distinct product categories--electronic whiteboards and audio-visual (AV) control systems--whose feature sets are growing, and even beginning to overlap.

Iowa State University will unveil next week "C6," a newly upgraded six-sided virtual reality room. The 3-meter by 3 meter C6, part of ISU's Virtual Reality Applications Center, will be able to immerse users in VR experiences enhanced by 100 million pixels of computer-generated imagery and eight channels of high-definition audio.

Auburn University will install a true high definition (HD) video screen in its Jordan-Hare Stadium prior to the start of the fall football season. Auburn claims the $2.9 million Daktronics Inc. HD display will be the first true HD stadium display in the Southeastern Conference. It measures 30 feet high by 74 feet wide and takes advantage of the latest HD-12 light emitting diode (LED) technology.

NEC Corp. has debuted a new model in its NP series of DLP-based projectors: the NP4000. The new model is an installation and large-venue projector targeted toward government, higher education and corporate applications. It made its first public appearance at the NSCA Expo 2007 in Orlando, FL.

A Stanford doctoral student is testing a system that enables computer users control a mouse pointer via eye-movement, MIT’s Technology Review reported. Although the capability has been available for people with disabilities for several years, the inventor, Manu Kumar, wants to make the eyeball mouse as simple as possible for everyday use.

We've all in our lives made the mistake of thinking of color as this fixed quantity--some sort of absolute that can be communicated, interpreted, and reproduced losslessly. The sky is blue. The tree is green. The car is red. I can write those words, and the colors materialize in your mind. But are the colors you "see" in your mind the same as the ones I intended to communicate to you? In other words, do they match? Surely not.
