Hollins University, among other higher ed institutions in Virginia, has implemented Omnilert's e2Campus emergency notification system (ENS) just ahead of a state-mandated deadline requiring them at every public institution of higher education by Jan. 1. Hollins itself isn't a public campus, but wished to implement an ENS before the end of the year, the school said in a company statement.

MIR3 has added a new notification feature to its family of inEnterprise solutions. Recorded Response allows emergency managers to notify their target recipients of events as well as collect responses in their recorded voices in addition to traditional response options. This feature now allows the collection of more exact and situation-specific detail.

Ave Maria University in southwestern Florida has deployed ADC's InterReach Fusion in-building wireless system to provide multi-carrier cellular service on its campus. The system currently delivers cellular services from inside a 90,000 square foot library and campus center as well as three, 40,000 square-foot dormitories.

Hopefully by now we have educated our faculty and staff to the dangers of traveling with a laptop containing sensitive information--say Social Security numbers or a faculty member's latest patentable research. But have we been educating them about the security risks of smart phones?

SMobile Systems has released an antivirus program for phones running Android, the Google-developed operating system. The company already offers similar solutions for BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Palm, and iPhone devices.

Omnilert has integrated its e2Campus emergency notification system with Twitter. This enables e2Campus clients to push e2Campus alerts automatically and simultaneously to their schools' Twitter accounts without having to log in to their Twitter account separately.

Rave Wireless will be adding BlackBerry devices to the roster of mechanisms by which alerts can be sent out through Rave Alert, its notification service. The company has also added AOL's AIM Express instant messaging service to its list of supported text receiving methods.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has begun deploying a voice over IP-based unified communications platform from NEC Unified Solutions.

Under an agreement with Sprint, medical students at the University of Louisville now will be able to use wireless technology to enhance their education and improve the clinical care of patients. Existing and incoming students will have the option of purchasing a discounted Sprint Windows Mobile smartphone that includes medical applications, such as ePocrates and medical and drug reference databases. The phone will also allow users to access the university's e-mail program and address book.

Central State University has deployed Leader Alert, an emergency notification system, for use at its Wilberforce and Dayton, OH campuses of more than 2,100 students. The communications service allows for simultaneous alert of the campus community by telephone, texting, and e-mail.

Temple University in Philadelphia has deployed Crossbeam Systems' X-Series security platform to secure campus-wide communications. The X-Series, Crossbeam's highest-performing security switch, consists of a "chassis" from which other vendors' applications can be run. The Crossbeam hardware facilitates the consolidation, virtualization, and simplification of security services delivery.

The University of Connecticut (UConn) selected Rave Wireless' Rave Alert as its emergency notification platform after conducting an evaluation and comparison of vendors. Concerns about the performance and reliability of its previous emergency notification provider, a Connecticut state-approved provider, prompted UConn to conduct the competitive evaluation.

The Technical College System of Georgia has deployed the Purewire Web Security Service for BlackBerry devices. The Technical College System oversees the state's system of 33 technical colleges, adult literacy programs, and a number of economic and workforce development programs.

Symantec Corp. has agreed to acquire MessageLabs, a provider of online messaging and Web security services, for about $695 million. MessageLabs sells managed services for anti-spam, anti-virus, image control, content filtering, instant messaging security, boundary and policy encryption, and e-mail arching and backup. The acquisition is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year.

Voorhees College in Denmark, SC has deployed NEC Unified Solutions' Sphericall to provide users with software-based voice and desktop communications tools as part of its voice over IP system. Sphericall provides a means for faculty and staff to interact between departments and connect with students using IP voice or desktop communication tools across the college, which has five locations in South Carolina.

A suite of five software applications developed by students at Stanford University to run on Apple's iPhone is now being tested on campus. Two are for students, to manage course registration and bills. The other three will allow users to access Stanford's searchable campus map, get team scores and schedules, and check listings in the university's online directory, StanfordWho.

University of Michigan football fans get to play with enhanced wireless communications through an arrangement with Verizon Wireless, which has activated a cell on light truck (COLT) that doubles capacity in and around Michigan Stadium on game days.

Two companies, Experian QAS and RuffaloCODY, have released an integrated edition of their software intended for colleges, universities, public broadcasting organizations, Greek organizations, and other nonprofits. QAS for RuffaloCODY combines QAS Pro Web for address validation on Web sites and intranets with RuffaloCODY's new CampusCall 3.3 phonathon automation software.

The 6,000-student Fayetteville State University in North Carolina has deployed a Federal Signal campus safety and security system to alert students, faculty and staff in the event of unsafe weather or dangerous campus conditions.
